Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves in scary Baltimore warmup crash

The inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix is Sunday afternoon and on Sunday morning, as is customary in the IZOD IndyCar Series, the cars took to the track for the warmup session.

During that warmup, Tony Kanaan trailed Helio Castroneves as the two entered turn one. According to Kanaan, he had no brakes. And above is what happened.

“No brakes at 170 plus mph wasn’t much fun this morning. We will try to go to the back up car for the race. Neck and back are a bit sore,” Kanaan said after the crash this morning.

Had Kanaan’s car not launched over Castroneves’ and slowed down a bit before hitting the tire barriers, the outcome could have been much worse. And Kanaan also acknowledged that too.

I want to thank and apologize to @h3lio but if wasn’t for you my friend I wouldn’t be here.

Wow.

Maybe it’s time that the IndyCar Series got rid of the morning warmup. Crashes and incidents in the warmup have become a little too numerous recently and teams are forced to scramble even more than usual to prepare cars in a matter of minutes, not hours. Not to mention that the last IndyCar fatality, Paul Dana’s crash at Homestead, came during the morning warmup.
