You’re probably just as surprised as I was.
From the press release:
Bobby Labonte, the 2000 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion, has officially officially launched the first NASCAR driver smartphone app. Labonte teamed up with XCO SportsLink to provide motorsports fans the opportunity to get the latest news about Labonte on their mobile device. The app is now available for download for all iPhone, iTouch and iPad users on iTunes in the App Store for 99 cents. The app will be available for Blackberry users soon.
For the five of you with Android phones who may be interested in downloading the app, there’s no word if it’s Android capable.
Even more intriguing, however, is the the promise that the application "will allow Labonte fans to track their favorite driver with never before utilized technology"
What could that be? Timing sensors in the car? The ability to listen to Labonte’s radio during the race? In car video? What’s that? That technology is already utilized?
Seriously though, this is hopefully a big step for NASCAR applications on smartphones. I’ve found that the NASCAR-related application selection is very limited, and given the success and ingenuity of MLB’s At the Bat application, there’s no reason that there shouldn’t already be a timing and scoring and scanner application for the Sprint Cup Series.
The first driver with a smartphone app is….. Bobby Labonte?!?!?!
