Dale Earnhardt Jr. breaks in the world’s largest HD screen in Charlotte

Ladies and gentlemen, the HD TV wars are over, and Charlotte Motor Speedway is your undisputed champion. This week, the track unveiled the world’s largest HD television screen, breaking it in with a visit from Dale Earnhardt Jr. and firing it up with a remote the size of a middle schooler.

How big is that screen? This big: at 200 x 80 feet, it’s only slightly smaller than a hockey rink, which is 200 x 85 feet. The Panasonic HDTV took more than four months to complete, using up to 57 workers a day and totaling more than 11,000 man-hours. At 332-plus tons, it’s the largest HDTV in the world, and it’s got 158 panels that will be illuminated by nine million LED lamps during events like the upcoming Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend.

The screen sits along the backstretch between Turns 2 and 3, meaning everybody on the other side of the track will have a clear view of the screen. No word on who gets to handle the controller and switch to a baseball game during the ride-around middle section of the race.
