The reports out of Australia started filtering out early Saturday morning: Tony Stewart was in trouble somehow, detained by Australian police. Was he smuggling dingoes?* Did he punch a wallaby? The mind reeled with the possibilities.
Sadly, the truth ended up being far more mundane. Stewart got into a dispute with the owner of the Sydney Speedway — stunning, I know — and things turned a mite ugly. Seems Stewart wasn’t pleased with something, perhaps track conditions, and made his concerns known to Brett Morris, co-owner of the track, by allegedly hitting him with a helmet. Morris didn’t take the gesture as a souvenir, and reportedly decked Smoke, leaving him with a black eye.
"Police from Rosehill central command were alerted to an altercation involving two men at a race car track about 7:30 [Saturday night]," a local police spokeswoman told the Sydney Morning Herald. "A 39-year-old man was arrested at the scene after a 46-year-old man was allegedly hit in the face by a racing helmet. The 39-year-old man was released without charge, pending further investigation.”
Anyway, according to all reports, Smoke left for America without further incident. But oh, we can’t let this one pass so easily, can we? I have a feeling we’ll be turning this particular shrimp on the barbie over and over and over, mate.
*- "Smuggling dingoes" sounds like it ought to mean something beyond the literal, doesn’t it?
