Emily Maynard, the former fiancee of Ricky Hendrick, the late son of NASCAR owner Rick Hendrick, will appear on the upcoming season of the Bachelor.
Ricky Hendrick ran for parts of four seasons in what’s currently the
Nationwide Series, retiring from driving in 2002 and moving into a
management role at Hendrick Motorsports.
He was killed in the plane crash that took the lives of
eight Hendrick Motorsports employees in October of 2004. The plane
crashed in a heavy fog en route to the Martinsville race.
Maynard, 24, and Ricky Hendrick were engaged in 2004 and on the night of Ricky’s memorial service, she announced to Rick Hendrick and his wife Linda that she was pregnant with the couple’s daughter Josephine, who is called "Ricki" in remembrance of her father.
In the season that starts January 3, Maynard will be competing for the affection of 38-year-old Brad Womack. Womack is back for a second season on the show, apparently trusting the process of finding love on a reality television show despite lackluster results the first time.
The accident has been a sensitive subject for the Hendrick family, so it will be interesting to see how it’s treated by the producers of the Bachelor and if Maynard will bring any primetime attention to the sport if she stays on the show for an extended period of time. The awkwardness that could ensue if Rick Hendrick is asked about the show during a media gathering in 2011 could be cringe-inducing.
